Artist Statement
I consider this work to be a nomad's mark - a nest I build at a rest stop along my journey. I piss out my territory with glitter.
Claiming a wall or any designated area allows for atmospheric ambiance. With installation, the immediate environment becomes a part of the work & thus, the space is transformed.
I am exploiting my feminine sensibilities with materials that don't carry historical baggage. This provides a commentary on macho painting in a domestic fashion. Though I still explore painting & find the process rewarding, I feel I can push the formal concepts necessary to good painting & expand on them with a diverse selection of materials that have infinite possibilities.
Process
The hunting & gathering is an essential part of the process. A new location will inspire me. I respond to what is unique about the landscape, the shopping, the people or the "flavor" of the place.
Most pieces are created on-site as a response to the environment. I have prepared & manipulated materials & gathered a collection of supplies to use.
I get acquainted with the space & begin to envision a palette & structure.
Some pieces are very much "in the moment" & evolve into something I never imagined.
It is a visual vocabulary borrowing from formal painterly technique: Decisions are made with consideration for composition, color & relationships of form.
Materials
I'm looking for sparkle, punchy color, reflection, transparency & the unique beauty in everyday items. They are rooted in child's play & that experience of viewing the world up close, intimately: I build a relationship with these materials & know their scent, texture & properties sensually.
Influence & Inspiration
Ultimately, it is the ocean, rivers & streams. A vast & mesmeric floating fantasy, a fluid rhythm that catches light & allows it to penetrate the surface, or reflect & bounce.
I am inspired by the "natural installation" that is formed around obstructions in the path of a stream of water. A gathering of debris that collects in pockets where a tree has fallen & caught the leaves, pollen & other flotsam floating along the surface.
That random placement is a Wab- Sabi aesthetic: No hierarchy, impermanent, incomplete...... a perfect imperfection.
